Thermal Grizzly AMD AM5 Short Backplate

Backplates

The AM5 Short Backplate is an optional mounting plate that replaces the original AM5 backplate. To use a custom retention kit, you need an alternative mount for the Socket Actuation Mechanism (SAM) of the motherboard. The AM5 Short Backplate is perfect for this purpose.

Product information "AM5 Short Backplate"

The AM5 Short Backplate is a shortened mounting plate that replaces the original AM5 backplate. Some CPU coolers compatible with the AM4 socket use a custom retention kit for mounting. Since the AM4 backplate is primarily used for mounting coolers, omitting this backplate is generally not a problem.

However, with the AM5 socket, the Socket Actuation Mechanism (SAM) is also screwed on via the backplate and cannot simply be omitted. In order to use an AM4-compatible cooler with a custom retention kit, you need an alternative holder for the mainboard's SAM.

This is where the AM5 Short Backplate comes into play and serves as a mounting plate for the mainboard's SAM. This extends the cooler compatibility to a wide range of CPU coolers. To protect against short circuits, the anodised aluminium plate is additionally covered with an insulating layer of polycarbonate.

AM5 Short Backplate

When do I need AM5 Short Backplate, and which cooler mounting systems can it be combined with?

You need the AM5 Short Backplate if, for example, a suitable AM4 cooler is to be installed on AM5 using its own backplate or a corresponding mounting system. It supports the motherboard’s SAM, which is normally secured by the original AM5 backplate. If your cooler is already compatible with the stock AM5 backplate, replacing it is generally unnecessary. Using an AM5 High Performance Heatspreader alone does not require a Short Backplate either.

How do I install AM5 Short Backplate, and what should I consider regarding mounting pressure?

Install the AM5 Short Backplate according to the instructions with the system switched off and disconnected from power. Lay the motherboard flat and remove the CPU before loosening the socket retention mechanism. Position the Short Backplate in the specified orientation with its insulating layer intact, then secure the socket retention mechanism using the specified screws. Next, install the separate cooler mounting hardware according to its instructions. Tighten the screws evenly and gradually in the specified sequence. Before switching on, check that the retention mechanism is secure and that the cooler makes full contact with the CPU. Additional mounting pressure cannot compensate for an incorrect mounting gap.

Which CPUs and sockets does AM5 Short Backplate support, and is it intended for use with a heatspreader or for direct-die mounting?

The AM5 Short Backplate is designed to secure the SAM on AM5 motherboards. The key considerations are whether your cooler requires its own backplate and whether its mounting system fits together with the Short Backplate. It neither removes the CPU heatspreader nor automatically adjusts the cooler height.
